Membership Categories Defined

Welcome to The Durham Regional Association of REALTORS® !

Designated REALTOR® Member
  • Head of Firm, Broker-In-Charge or Sole Proprietor of the firm
  • Must hold an active broker’s license or be a State Certified Appraiser
  • Must be actively engaged in the real estate business
  • Must hold themselves out to the public as being engaged in real estate
  • Supervises all agents in firm
  • Does not hold primary membership in any other Association of REALTORS®
  • Subject to non-member assessment for all licensees affiliated with the firm who are not members of a REALTOR® Association
  • Use the Designated REALTOR® Membership Application to apply for this category of membership
  • Membership dues for new Designated REALTORS® are prorated monthly and are based on the month in which application is made. On the Fee Schedule page, pay the amount in the Total column for the month in which you join DRAR.
REALTOR® Member
  • Licensee associated either as an employee or as an independent contractor with a Designated REALTOR®
  • Must have an active real estate/appraiser license or be an appraiser trainee
  • Must be actively engaged in the real estate business
  • Does not hold primary membership in any other Association of REALTORS®
  • Use the REALTOR® Membership Application to apply for this category of membership
  • Membership dues for new REALTORS® are prorated monthly and are based on the month in which application is made. On the Fee Schedule page, pay the amount in the Total column for the month in which you join DRAR.
Secondary Designated REALTOR® Member
  • Head of Firm, Broker-In-Charge or Sole Proprietor of the firm
  • Must hold an active broker’s license or be a State Certified Appraiser
  • Must be actively engaged in the real estate business
  • Must hold themselves out to the public as being engaged in real estate
  • Supervises all agents in firm
  • Holds primary membership in another REALTOR® Association
  • Must present a “Letter of Good Standing” from their primary board attesting dues were paid for the current year and last known date of Code of Ethics training
  • Use the REALTOR® Membership Application to apply for this category of membership
  • Membership dues for new Secondary Designated REALTORS® are prorated monthly and are based on the month in which application is made. On the Fee Schedule page, pay the total of the DRAR dues, Initiation Fee and Orientation Fee for the month in which you join DRAR.
Secondary REALTOR® Member
  • Must have an active real estate/appraiser license or be an appraiser trainee
  • Must be actively engaged in the real estate business
  • Holds primary membership in another REALTOR® Association
  • Must present a “Letter of Good Standing” from their primary board attesting dues were paid for the current year and last known date of Code of Ethics training
  • Use the REALTOR® Membership Application to apply for this category of membership

Associate Member
  • An individual who has a professional interest in real estate (mortgage banker, home inspector, real estate attorney, etc.)
  • Cannot engage in general brokerage (selling or listing of real estate)
  • If a real estate licensee, must be on inactive status
  • Not required to attend New Member Orientation
  • Member at the local level only
  • Membership is on an individual basis. Only the member is entitled to benefits.
  • If dues and fees are paid by the firm, membership is transferable to another person in the firm. If dues and fees are paid by the member, membership transfers with the member. Dues are not refundable for any reason.
  • Use the Associate/Affiliate Membership Application to apply for this category of membership
  • Membership dues for new Associate Members are prorated quarterly and are based on the month in which application is made. On the Fee Schedule page, pay the total of the DRAR Dues & Initiation Fee for the month in which you join DRAR.
Affiliate Member
  • An individual who has a professional interest in real estate (mortgage banker, home inspector, real estate attorney, etc.)
  • Cannot engage in general brokerage (selling or listing of real estate)
  • If a real estate licensee, must be on inactive status
  • Not required to attend New Member Orientation
  • Member at the local and state level only
  • Membership is on an individual basis. Only the member is entitled to benefits.
  • Membership dues are not transferable and non-refundable for any reason
  • Use the Associate/Affiliate Membership Application to apply for this category of membership
  • Membership dues for new Affiliate Members are prorated monthly and are based on the month in which application is made. On the Fee Schedule page, pay the total of the DRAR & NCAR Dues and Initiation Fee for the month in which you join DRAR.
Non-Member Licensee
  • This non-membership category is authorized by the National Association of REALTORS® to name those active real estate licensees affiliated with the firm of a Designated REALTOR® (DR) but have been allowed by their DR not to pay dues or become a REALTOR® member. These licensees may practice real estate but are not permitted to use the term REALTOR®. All actions of the non-member are the responsibility of their DR.
